This past August, we became part of the “empty nest” culture. Our youngest moved on campus at the University of Iowa and suddenly, it was just us. We’ve enjoyed our time together, but this winter, frankly, has been awful. True, we were able to get away a couple of weeks ago to Iowa City for a quick night away, but the drive home was awful.

So, today, with no bad weather, no real cold, no nothing, we decided to go out for lunch and do a bit of “whimsical shopping”. We headed to a small town about 30 minutes from our little piece of heaven. Our first stop, lunch! We both ran on the treadmill and didn’tΒ have much for breakfast, thus were a bit more hungry. After lunch, we split up, with this town being known for many different women’sΒ stores, I went to the local antique place and poked around. We finished off at the local feed store, pick up chicken feed, dog food, gloves, socks, and a cutting board. Can’t have a date without a little real life, can we? π

As we made our way home, it was comforting to know that we could finally get out of our house and enjoy our time together. As the weather slowly but surely gets better, we cannot wait to get out more, enjoy our slice of heaven in Northeast Iowa, and enjoy our newly found freedom as a couple!

Your area does sound like a little piece of heaven. Especially since you said you have chickens! We always pick up chicken feed too when we go to certain towns for an outing. Makes things more interesting.ππ

It does make things interesting, that is for certain! π

I know that feeling of being an empty nester. It does take some time to get used to. My husband and I are trying new things and going and doing things that we weren’t able to do before. It is a new phase of life, and….I dare say it….you will get used to it, too. Enjoy exploring the world!

I live in the Houston area. I have seen a meme circulating that says we had 9 sunny days in January and only 2 sunny days in February. I actually hate the heat and love the cold (I live in the wrong place!), but this is just excessive! I’m hoping for some of that weather improvement myself.

I love the cold as well, but this is just silly! Just a little warm up would do us all good! π

We are trying. It will be a work in progress, which is ok by me! π

What a fun way to spend the day together, and I love your hashtag comments! π

The hashtag comments seem to be my thing. They offer a fun distraction from the drudges of writing! π

I enjoyed your post about real life and a date. My husband and I joke all the time about so many of our “romantic” dates. Usually, they involve a meal, haircut or two and a trip to Wal-Mart for supplies. (sadly Wal-Mart is our only option without driving over an hour).

I feel your pain! I get scolded for saying, “Can we make a quick stop,” but it usually involves a lot of laughing and hand holding, so I can’t be that bad?!?! π
