We just finished the first three seasons of Ted Lasso.

All I have to say is “wow”.

I heard all the hype, saw all the clips, and had myself believing that it couldn’t be as good as everyone made it out to be.

I was wrong.

It was better.

Whether dealing with mental health, team building, racism, homophobia, agism, or just stabbing someone in the back, this show presented those topics and dealt with them with a style and grace I would have never thought possible.

Sure, it’s Americanized futbol, and sure, I don’t understand the sport at all, but damn, it was so much fun to watch.

After digging into the World Cup this past summer, I understand the game a little more, and as a coach, getting players to trust is huge. It was everything that I could have hoped for and more.

The cherry on top, the omnipresent use of the word “Fuck” was outstanding. It was a verb, a noun, an adjective, and maybe an adverb. What a multifunctional word!

In all seriousness, if you’ve not had the chance to have “The Lasso Experience”, I highly recommend it. I feel there will be things both in my classroom and on the basketball court that will change this year because of this show. Not huge structural change, but attitude: how I’ll deal with negative attitudes, giving more voice and choice, hearing my students more. My teams and classroom have always had this, but with age comes some jading, and I know I’ve become much more so over the last couple of years.

I can do better. I can be better. And yes, I feel a little better, like things around me have a little more light to them.

Remember to do two things this week:

  1. Belive!
  2. Be a gold fish!
