As a child of the 80’s, it always pops up in my head, especially when we are talking about educational kinds of things.
* Testing
* Common Core
* Testing
* Over crowded classrooms
* Lack of teacher voices at the table (any table discussing education)
* Using testing to judge teachers
* Not acknowledging that poverty is an issue
* Lack of science and social studies instruction
* Over emphasis on math and literacy
* Did I mention testing scores
Why aren’t we talking more about:
* Creating dynamic learning areas
* Finding the voices for our students
* Finding the voice for our teachers
* Making learning matter
* Making learners responsible for their own learning
* Helping parents become responsible for their own learners
* Creating an environment where students could learn what they wanted
* Creating “brave” students
Just things that have been bopping around in my head. Nothing earth shattering or mind blowing, but why not? If enough of us go “hmmmm”, should we be able to create something that fits what we see as ideal instead of being told what is it? Shouldn’t we be able to take control of our schools, helping our students, parents, and community see the power of their collective voices, their collective genius?
Think about it…..gives you goosebumps doesn’t it? That’s what my school will be when I win the lottery. 😉
