List three jobs you’d consider pursuing if money didn’t matter.

Good morning, WordPress and readers! It’s a gorgeous day in Iowa and this question has me thinking:

List three jobs you’d consider pursuing if money didn’t matter.

That first job for me is what I’m doing now, teaching. I love what I do and I do what I love. My students get tired of hearing that, but it’s true. Sure I growl about policies that don’t make sense, professional development that is done to check a box versus help my development as a teacher, or any of the myriad of things that are issues in education. At the end of the day, I truly enjoy the adults in the building and I’ve not taught in a place where I did not love teaching the kids. Any teacher will tell you there are those kids or those classes, but there are always kids who just want to learn and who make your day better. I’m 30 years in and live in an area where my pay is decent, but yes, if I wasn’t doing this, I pursue it.

The second job, I’d love to be a computer programmer/software engineer. My best friend from college is doing that right now and loves what he does. My daughter is a software engineer for John Deere and, if there was a lay off, could write herself a job anywhere she’d want. My only problem with being a software engineer or programmer, I just don’t have the patience. I taught beginning Python for a couple of years and as my own experience grew, I’d get frustrated very quickly when I couldn’t figure a problem out. Our training was, well, not the best, so I didn’t have many people to turn to. However, I was quite amazed at how well my students would do. A couple of them cheated (the Internet is both awesome and sucks at the same time), but overall, they were very creative AND problem-solved the heck out of things, which I was so happy to see! I don’t do that anymore, but again, it would be something I’d love pursue!

Finally, I’d love to be a DJ. I love house music, electronic music, and all the different sub-styles that fall inside there. I wouldn’t even need to be a big-name person, I’d love to play in smaller clubs where I’d get to interact with those around me. There’s a YouTube channel called Boiler Room whose goal it “connecting club culture to the wider world on screen and irl through parties, film, and video.” I love their channel because the music is amazing (check out DJ Jazzy Jeff in Philadelphia), but also because the fans are right there, hyping up the DJ and each other throughout the various sets.

So, my three jobs, I’d still go after being a teacher simply because I love the idea of helping students learn. After that, the idea of a programmer/software engineer or a club DJ are ones that, if money wasn’t an issue, I’d love to give a shot because why not? If our “F*ck It” plan is put together, who knows, maybe I start learning so I could make little money while traveling.

You can always teach an old dog new tricks! 🙂
