Year 9 of my Challenges.
Not quite like the cool kids in double digits.
But that’s ok!
#beniceortheywillnotreadyourstuff
Yeah, yeah.
I looked at last year’s introduction and found my last bullet point to be telling. I said that I was “cautiously optimistic” about my writing. I’d hit a pretty good streak of writing all days in March for a few years. Last year was tough. This year’s been tough. So we’ll see how it goes.
- If you don’t know me, I’m Darin, and I teach sixth grade in Iowa.
- This is my 29th year of teaching, and my first in my current position. I left a district that I’d been part of for 23 years for this challenge, and oh the challenge it’s been.
- I love music, basketball (and most sports in general), gardening, camping, family, and creating piles in my classroom.
#noliethere
- I’ve been a prolific writer, but that’s dropped off in the last year and a half. I’m not sure why because I find this therapeutic in a way, but it’s just not happening at a level that I’m used to.
- My kids are grown and out of the house, doing adult things (like not calling their parents).
- My wife is a teacher in the same district I’m in. Much of this is one of those “full circle” kind of things because we started our careers off together in Alaska, 29 years ago, teaching right across the hallway from each other.
- I coach basketball, with my wife, another full-circle moment because we started off coaching together as well.
- I’m constantly amazed at the level of writing during this March Challenge and on Tuesdays. Sometimes, I cringe when I submit my posts because the level of writing here is top notch and mine is, well, not.
#IamfineYouarefineWeallarefun
- I just had a student bring me a loaf of banana bread, explaining his process. That’s the way of my classroom this year, random stuff and Spanish, all wrapped up in the tortilla of life.
I don’t know, if you’ve got something you want to know, ask. I’m an open book. As silly as it sounds, my blog is a happy place for me. Somewhere that I can express myself freely without stumbling over words. Otherwise, I look forward to reading and responding.
And I’m done before 11:47 PM. Maybe I can do this!
Happy Challenge to all! π

Thank you for the introduction! (I might copy your format tomorrow!) Your personality comes through so clearly in your writing. I look forward to reading more of your posts.

Thanks! It’s always an adventure for sure pushing the “publish” button, but in the end, we do it for a reason! Good luck this month with your writing! π

Darin, I’ll be stopping by often. You make me smile. (I hope your adult kids text periodically; that’s become the tie that binds for us.) I thought about you yesterday when I read that Caitlin Clark was going pro; a recent post of yours put her on my radar. Weird, isn’t it, how these words build community betweenβlet’s be honestβstrangers?

Words carry power, I tell this to my students all the time! They roll their eyes, but then, will say something hurtful and see their words at work!
On a basketball note, I wore my Caitlin Clark shirt to supper last night and was asked by a waitress if I was watching the game Sunday (of course I am!). As we left, I heard another table talking about her as well.

Welcome back, Darin! Your post also made me smile; I appreciate your writing voice and how you intermix hashtags, fun facts, and school snippets to create a snapshot of you. Happy writing!

Thank you! Writing is my happy place for sure, even if I am a grump! π

I liked your post and I am sure we all will have a good month of reading and writing. Regards, Lakshmi

Welcome back!! Over the course of seven years somehow I didn’t know you taught in Alaska. Like you, my writing has dropped off significantly too. And like you I’m going to try to be better at it this year.

Hey Anna! I’m just stunned that I’ve never written about my Alaskan experiences! I hope you’ve been well, my friend! π

You taught in Alaska?? That’s so cool! I really love the full circle moments between you and your wife; so beautiful. I look forward to reading your writing this month, friend.

Thank you, Britt! I’ll do a couple of blogs because apparently, I’ve never written about this topic before! LOL! π

Hi Darin,
I’m a little younger in teacher years, but not by much. I taught 6th graders for a dozen years. I think it’s so cool that you started teaching across the hall from your wife. I know several teacher couples who started their teaching careers as you did and retired together, so inspiring. I look forward to reading your slices this month.

Thank you, Alice! It’s been an adventure, for sure! π

Great intro. I imagine you could write the entire month just about your Alaska experiences. I love this image about your experiences-“all wrapped up in the tortilla of life!” π Happy writing!

I love a good tortilla! π
