Name your top three pet peeves.

Everyone has pet peeves. We are human. And with that humanity comes the ability to be annoyed by dumb, ridiculous, ignorant, or otherwise useless things.

Ain’t be human grand?

So, my top three pet peeves based on my years on this year:

  1. Disrespect: My students know that if they disrespect me, disrespect others, or disrespect themselves, they’ll be talking to someone. I don’t tolerate it in my classroom, not at all. Nor do I tolerate in my house. The problem with disrespect, kids see it all the time: on the news, on their favorite TV shows, from their parents, and others in the community. That lack of respect for most things is so prevalent right now that I could turn on the TV and find someone, somewhere, talking sh*t about someone else. It just never stops. All I can do is keep preaching that respect is universal, that we need to show it more, and that a lack of respect shows a major lack of character.
  2. Lack of character: No, I’m not talking about those people who are dull! I’m talking about those people who steal, cheat, “borrow”, and do other sketchy stuff, all in the name of “making myself look good.” We all know that friend who is just a little bit edgy with what they say, what they do, and the people they hang around with daily. They could be a good person, but their lack of character will never allow them to be at their best. We talk about character all the time in sixth grade, but it applies to all of life. I harp about surrounding yourself with people of character, those who will call your own sketchy stuff that you cannot see right in front of your face. People of character will push you to do better. If you lack character, you’ll fall back to the bare minimum or worse, and find the excuse to give up on being better.
  3. Being talked down to: Whether it’s students, adults, my own kids, or my wife, this one gets me hard. And it’s not just that someone thinks they know better, it’s HOW it comes across. Condescending and rude come to mind. I’m not one who will confront people about their tone, attitude, or words, but damn, nothing sets me off faster than those types of people.

So, what are your pet peeves? I’d love to hear that in the comments! πŸ™‚
