My Facebook feed right now looks like an old man yelling, “get off my lawn”, to the wind.
#what
Since our current president took office, I’ve been posting a pretty steady stream of stuff about what he and his administration are doing to our country. While Facebook is not much of a place anymore, it’s where I am to keep track of a few closer friends and share pictures with my parents.
I also know that my steady stream of nonsense has cost me some “friends”. I found a post from a couple of years ago and one of the “add friends” people was someone I knew from a running board back in the day. I looked at another memory and parent of a classmate is on the “add friend” list.
#awwwww
Naw, the one friend was an Internet friend, one who, chances were, I’d never meet in real life. Once the board went down, the group we had kind of fell apart. I feel a little bit bad, yet, sometimes those friends just drift. The other, she once told me she hoped that “I wasn’t teaching like this in class” as I went off on Trump during a 2016 debate. Once he won, she told me that the country “needed a chance”.
#eek
Yup. After that, to say we were friends would have been overstatement. And to see she’d unfriended me didn’t surprise me either. Many of my high school classmates have fallen down the MAGA rabbit hole and have been lost. I’ve got three who we share things back and forth, but otherwise, there aren’t many more.
I think about a statement I read a while back about politics and relationships
Don’t let politics ruin relationships. One of the truest tests of maturity is the ability to disagree with someone while remaining respectful.
#wellthatistrue
And I agree. If this were 2010, we could do that. We could talk politics, agree to disagree, and have a drinkn or go out for supper. Not any more. It’s not about conservative or liberal, red or blue. It’s about what you believe America should be. The vision that Trump has for America is frightening, a mix of power, intimidation, and ignorance. I cannot wrap my head around why people would want this world for their children or grandchildren.
So, when is enough enough? When our legislators, when our elected officials start to see how damaging this all is for our country, both now and decades down the road.
I know that my old man yelling on Facebook does me no good. I won’t change anyone’s mind with my rants. However, when I post, I’m posting not to make people mad, but to give a voice to those who may not have one. Little old me in the middle of nowhere cannot get a whole lot of change where I am at, but my only voice can amplify those who are afraid to say something.
Yes, it is a little bit silly, but sometimes, silly is all you have!
