This is always one of my favorite slices because everyone loves music. In my travels around Iowa, the country, and the world, I’ve yet to find someone who says “I don’t like music!”

Music from the first time I wrote about it to now has changed so much. Vinyl has over taken CDs as the sound medium of choice for physical music. Streaming services are the rage whether it’s Pandora, Spotify, Apple Music, or any number of the dozens of podcast hosting sites. I was using Google Podcasts for a long time, then they shut down the site so I scrambled to find something new. Right now, I’m using one called Podbean which works well for me. I don’t need much, just some basic features where I can download, save, and relisten if I want to.
Today’s music finds are off of TikTok of all places. There are so many awesome independent musicians on that app that I just cannot even stand it!
The first one is under the name of StereoFox. This stream (both on TikTok and Spotify) is just a mix of real funky, smooth, guitar-based music with sleek vocals. It is like background music for the soul. If I’m at school working there, this is a stream that I put on and just groove.
The next is under the name of Boyan. Again, another funky game session wrapped up with horns and smooth vocals. I love music like this and it just makes my heart happy to listen to while on writing or reading a book.
My final artist is a one called NTRPY, an independent artist who specializes in electronic dance music. She’s one who doesn’t have a ton to followers on TikTok and not a lot of listens on Spotify, but I really dig her music. She describes her music as”melodic dubstep with nostalgic vibes”, which to me gives off serious late 90’s and early 2000’s EDM (a beautiful time for this kind of music). I keep waiting for her to start blowing up because the tracks that she has out are pretty damn good.
I’ve also rediscovered some old favorites: Gaelic Storm with their new band member, The High Kings, A Tribe Called Quest, and even some AC/DC.
So, there’s the music for this year. Not as much as the past, but between this post and my post about the Big Turn Music Fest, it should help you find your new favorite band, at least for this month! π
Now, in May, check back, because we will be going to the Midwest Music Fest in Winona, MN. Another two-day event FULL of live music. It will be awesome and I’m very excited to be going!

It sounds like you’ve got some good tunes going, Darin! I feel like I am listening to audiobooks more for my commute, and less music. I’ve got to pull out some playlists for when I am working in my classroom and when I am prepping and grading papers. Music, as you know, of course, can change the mood so much!

Darin, wow. That’s a lot of music. I have all the links opened. Nothing is familiar to me yet. I’ll have to have my husband sign in on Spotify for me so I can listen. I’m always curious about the music people like, so I’ll enjoy that. Enjoy the Midwest Music Fest!

Well hello! I was surprised to see Gaelic Storm, but then realized you were in the midwest. I am formerly from La Crosse, WI and they came to Irish Fest many, many times and we always loved seeing them there. Also a fan of A Tribe Called Quest which I learned of through Native folks in WI. Thanks for the names of the others. I popped over to Spotify to listen to NTRPY, Boyan, and StereoFox. I don’t often venture out much beyond the Korean and Spanish music that I listen to as an attempt to practice/immerse/learn more, but it was fun to hear something new.

Hey! We love LaCrosse and will probably head there more often to see Gaelic Storm because they are no longer the headline at the Iowa Irish Fest (boooo!). We love the city and it’s Mississippi River charm! π Would you mind sharing some groups you listen to? I’m always on the lookout for new stuff as well!

Since I am studying Korean I listen to a lot of music from Korea. I love D.O. and I.U., AKMU, and OKDAL. Would you believe a song I really like is by OKDAL and is called Dwayne Johnson? I’m also studying Spanish and strangely enough, one of my favorite songs in that language is by the Korean singer D.O. – Si fuera mia.

Great post! I’ve been listening to Kendrick Lamar’s GNX on near-constant repeat for months, but your mention of AC/DC brought back a hilarious memory of driving through Worcester, Mass., windows down, stereo blasting a particular song with a very NSFW title, and my friend and I shouting out the lyrics as we went. Completely ridiculous. I haven’t thought of that in forever. Thank you for the smile!
