Whoa, two days in a row. It could be a writing streak! π
Last week, I had students ask me what I’d do if I were not a teacher.
#wow
I know! And it got me thinking, what WOULD I be doing if I weren’t a teacher? So, I looked at it through the eyes of me throughout the years.
I know, in 3rd grade, we were asked to write about what we wanted to be. So I drew myself a semi and wrote about driving a truck. I thought that it would be awesome to be out on the road, seeing all the different places in the country, and living on the road. It’s a precursor to the whole idea of van life/RV life. Either way, I found that idea intriguing (in the mind of a 3rd grade boy)!

You know it!
As a 10th grader, I was all about being a radio announcer. Growing up, we listened to WGN out of Chicago and Cubs baseball. Harry Carey and Steve Stone were calling those games and they always had so much fun! They had great chemistry, Stone tolerated a lot of the gaffs that Harry made, which made it that much more fun to listen to. Harry trying to pronounce some foreign names was absolutely amazing. They were the first broadcasters who made me really think about that as a career. It never happened, but as I sit watching the Iowa/Wisconsin women’s basketball game, I’m doing some play-by-play, so the dream is still there! π

No doubt, but it’s all good!
We jump ahead a few years, to 40 y/o me (literally it could be 23 y/o me and beyond, but we’ll let me age a bit). I’ve found that I love coaching basketball. Absoltely love it. It’s teaching, but on a court and I can yell if I need to without too many people getting upset. This version (and let’s be honest, today’s version of me) would love to be a big-time college coach. If I’d known in college what I know now, I’d have worked to have been a manager of some sort, a grad assistant somewhere, and seen where I could go. However, my middle schoolers are just fine. There’s no pressure to win (ok, maybe a little). Overall, I’ve had amazing parents and support from the community. And best of all, I’ve been able to coach some awesome kids.

Oh, I’ve had dreams of getting there, don’t worry! I’ve also replayed one of two times I cried after a game way too many times in my head (missed the state tournament in a last-second shot, losing to a coach who will always be the villain in my head) I’ve felt those highs and lows coaching where I’ve been!
This leads me to the point of this whole mess. Yes, I could have been any of those things, but teaching is what I’ve always wanted to do. Entering college, I really thought I’d be a high school history teacher and football coach, the “typical” kind of thing. My first placement was in a combined 2nd/3rd grade classroom and I was sold: elementary for me! I’ve always been in middle school. I’ve had one year of teaching some high school and 29 years in fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. They are my home base. They keep me young with their nonsense, their “coolness”, and their attitudes.

True, but I cannot image being anywhere else.
In the end, the teaching route has been good to me so I cannot complain. It was interesting to go back in my own head to picture me in different spots of my life and see, what did I want to be?
What about you? If you weren’t teaching (or doing what you are doing currently) where would you be?

I love teaching more than anything I can imagine doing for a job, exceptβ¦ π
If I could get paid to write I would definitely do that instead. I donβt know if I would give up teaching completely but a free year would be amazing. π thanks for sharing your journey.

Dang, I forgot about getting paid to write! That would be awesome too! π You could do the whole sabbatical thing, write, travel, AND get paid! π

I can dare to dream π thanks for the compliment

I bet you youβd kill it π

fun read! In first grade I wanted to be a dancing librarian. A ballerina in a bookstore basically. Dream big.

Dream big, indeed! π

My husband and son are teachers and are happy to be so. My husband has retired but is still in contact with his students on Facebook. It is a blessing when we are happy with who and what we are.

I’ve got a student from my first class 31 year ago who we still trade memes, which is pretty sweet. I agree, it is a blessing, but playing with the “what ifs’ is fun too! π

love this, Darin. I think Iβll have to tuck this question away and write about it this month. And I can totally see you coaching in the NCAAβs!

Hee hee! That would be amazing!!

I love the “what ifs.” Like you, I know I was meant for teaching, but there are so many fun opportunities out there! I love how you showcased the way you live out many of these dreams, even if they aren’t your full time job.

I was a fun reflection into alternative timelines (Marvel nerd). Teaching has been my jam, but wow, the “what ifs” are so much fun to play out.

This is an interesting thought experiment. Iβd be a lawyer if I hadnβt become a teacher. Itβs really the only other career I thought about. These days I wonder if I would have stayed in teaching. BTW, I was crushed when Harry Carey left the Cardinals. I listened to him call St. Louis games w/ my father many years ago.

Another Cardinal fan? Good grief! π The law instead of teaching? I’ll be honest, I’ve never had anyone say that before and I think it’s great!

Darin, what a great post. You make me smile throughout with your witty voice, and the hashtags! So fun. I would like to think that I would have become an author, a successful one, but I don’t think I could really have been. Sometimes when I was really exhausted and busy raising a family and teaching, I pictured myself being a receptionist in a sleepy office. I thought that sounded like heaven. (Maybe for a week.)

A Wal-Mart greeter comes to mind when the students are being pains in class! π

Growing up a Cardinals fan (We had Harry first, LOL), I remember Harry Caray’s iconic voice quite clearly-and it’s still the one I expect to hear when I turn on the radio to listen to a game. Growing up next to Lambert Airport and watching planes constantly take off and land, I always wanted to be a ‘stewardess’ for the fantasy of traveling the world. Now, I wouldn’t trade my teaching career for anything-it was the best!

“We had Harry first” LOL!! I love it! Globetrotting in air travel is a pretty cool dream! π

Good question! When I was five, I wanted to grow up to be a go-go dancer …. but I’ve had to set that goal aside! I would love to have a tiny farm. I worked on a farm a thousand years ago, and I loved it. I couldn’t see a way that I could make that be a life for myself, however. Had I only known that there’s an excellent farm schooll right here in this city, I might have enrolled when I first moved here when I was in my 20s, and who knows where I’d be today! π
