Two blogs in three days? Who is this guy behind the keyboard? Honestly, it feels good to get some words on the screen. My wife’s friend in Missouri is a writer who gets caught up in the little things, so my wife suggested that she get going on the outline first and then worry about the other details. Sunday, we both sat down to write, taking a break to go to the local greenhouse and get some frozen yogurt. As we drove over, we were talking about the story she was working on and I (of course) asked her if she had an outline.

Ha! She gave me some serious side eye as she said, “Of course I do!”.

I teased her about following her own advice! She wanted to do a historical book about her family based on stuff she’s found doing genealogy work the last couple of years. She’s got big dreams, so I keep gently encouraging those dreams. I know that time gets lost in the research instead of writing, but she’s found out a lot about her family, both being able to correct some lore, but also just finding some “that’s so cool” pieces (being part of the Mayflower fits into that category!).

Anyway, one of the reasons for a little more research is that we are traveling to Scotland and Ireland, leaving this Friday! We both did DNA tests and found Scottish DNA in both our families (along with Irish in mine)! We also have the Outlander books and TV series to blame for this too! πŸ™‚

Our 30th wedding anniversary was in March so it was a pretty easy click to sign up. We are going on a “Spirits Tour” – whiskey, gin, and ghost stories so that sold it! We fly out on Friday, so we’ll be in Edinburgh for about a week, Belfast for three days and Dublin for another three days, flying out on the 4th of July! I told my wife I was dressing in full American gear for the flight home. She quickly vetoed that idea.

Sometimes, when you have so much time, you get overwhelmed with everything you CAN do. We are coming in two days early, so we have plans on what we’ll do on both of those days, with our official first day for us to sleep in (because everyone else will be flying in).

To say we are excited is an understatement. The list was HUGE as to what we have to do, yet, things keep getting checked off. There are many silly things (feeding hummingbirds, empty recycling, etc), but the idea of visiting places of such history, such beauty, and having the reputation of delicious food and drink, it could rain the entire time and we’d still be happy!

So, the next time you hear from me on the Slice of Life, it will be from Edinburgh!
